Day 22 and Day 23

The reindeers are getting prepared for their magical flight around the world. Every child deserves to receive a present this holiday season. And the little drummer boy is beating on his drum with marching trees in a row.

Day 21

Day 21 means 4 more sleeps tip the big guy in the red suit comes!
In the meantime, here are some stars borrowed from the sky to decorate your tree.

Day 20

Day 20 is a little bit late. That's because yesterday I was too busy scoffing my face on freshly roasted piggy on a spit instead of doing all those jobs that have to get done before christmas. What I need is a christmas fairy to wave her magic wand and have my house cleaning done, shopping list written, presents bought, presents wrapped, christmas dinner cooked and dishes done! But all that good stuff lies ahead of me. I hope you get all you wish for and more this christmas x

Day 15

Day 15 in my Christmas Advent calendar challenge. Where has the time flown? Doing this challenge is helping me keep an eye on the date. So close to Christmas day and I am yet to find the perfect stocking filler present for my partner....maybe tomorrow. Do you have a stocking? Its kind of a silly tradition here in Australia. Who hangs stockings over the fireplace? Kind of a funny thought as I sit in 29 degree celsius weather.

In the lead up to christmas day....

...here's a christmas message from me to you. xx

Day 14

I can't believe we are up to Day 14 already. I also can't believe that my momentum for thinking up, drawing and designing a pattern or illustration a day up until christmas is STILL going. I've got a list and I have sort of jumbled themes around depending on what i really felt like drawing, re-working, or when inspiration struck. Today it was all about birds - again. I love birds. I drew these little guys with tall, wooly christmas hats on. It's my take on three french hens. Except using birds. Subtle I know. Day 14 also means we are getting really close to christmas. Right then, i'm off to write my christmas wish list. eek!

Three wise birds.

Day 13

I think it would feel like christmas ALL the time if you lived in the great white north.
Merry Christmas, here's day 13.

Day 12

Well we had our small team's christmas work party yesterday. It was more of a lunch session which lasted a few hours. We ate, and ate, and ate, and drank mojitos and ate. Drank some more mojitos and ate some more. It was great. I certainly felt a little like this guy by the end of the day....
time for a detox i think :)

Day 11

Day 11 Christmas Advent Calendar challenge.
If i could have a white christmas, I'd like to stay in a gingerbread house in Switzerland, or Bavaria or the French Alps. Problem is I love gingerbread that i'd probably eat it!
Wherever you are spending Christmas, I hope it's a warm and lovely one.

Day 10

Day 10 Christmas Advent Calendar challenge.
This little fellow loves to sleep. He's holding fast to his candy cane though. Luckily the birds are helping him. xx

Day 9

Wreaths can come in all shades of colours. We don't have a wreath that we can hang on the outside of our front door. I don't know why. Maybe we think it would just get nicked anyway.?? It's not like we live in a rough neighbourhood or anything. Very suburbia in fact, and nice and quiet (except when the party house has guests over). So tomorrow I might rectify that thought and go and buy a wreath to decorate our front door. If I could buy one like this, I certainly would. Day 9. woohoo!

Christmas Advent calendar challenge - Day 7

Our tree is a fibre optic kind. Pretty when it's dark. We did put some purple and pink and turquoise blue baubles on it this year. We also have some silver beads and a silver star. What colour theme is your tree taking this year? Here's Day 7 of my christmas advent calendar challenge.

Day 6

I'm a little relieved we don't have an all staff Christmas party this year. We're having a much civilised smaller team party. I know there will be food, and definitely wine (in moderation of course), and I'm sure there will be dancing. Much like this guy....without getting baubles tangled in our hair!
Here's wishing you a great work Christmas party. xx

Day 5 - Christmas Advent Calendar

Christmas trees come in all shapes and sizes. We put ours up the other day, as you do, on December 1st. Tradition and all that. A synthetic green, fibre optic type. Looks great when it's dark.
Sometimes it would be nice to live in Sweden, or Norway, or Germany where I'm sure everybody gets real trees for their living room....
Have fun decorating your tree this year.

Christmas Advent calendar - Day 4

It doesn't snow in Queensland at Christmas, not ever actually. We always have hot, balmy, humid weather at Christmas time and sometimes an afternoon thunderstorm to 'cool' things down. Not a snowflake to be seen though. Ever!

Advent Calendar catch up

I have thrown myself into this Christmas Advent challenge. The aim to design a new Christmas themed illustration or pattern everyday until Christmas. Wow! I mean it isn't like I'm really busy with my full time day job.....or anything....
I might make it to day 25 or I may just fall into a heap. I have nothing to lose. So here's day 1 (playing a days catch up) and day 2. May the silly season begin! x Julie

Hand drawn typography

I've always loved typography but admit to not really extending myself to design any or use hand drawn typography in my artwork. I know it is all the rage now so i have to get my fine motor skills up to speed again and practice, practice, practice.
Using a keyboard and mouse certainly weakens the hand muscles...
I had fun getting into the procedure whilst completing these typography examples. From pencil to staedtler pigment liner, scanner to illustrator, the whole process took me a good couple of hours.
I can now understand and appreciate all the work that goes into adding hand drawn typography into your designs. Here's a peek into some of my recent efforts.

My website is live!!!!

Hello there! Have to say I had a fantastic day today. Designing, filing, sorting (necessary housekeeping to keep all my files neat and easy to find on my mac), and all so I could accomplish what I thought would be an arduous task. I completed the first draft of my website. www.patternplaystudio.com

I say first draft because I will have heaps of patterns to add to it in the future (fingers crossed) and some copy writing to do as well. :)

So head on over to www.patternplaystudio.com and say hello.

Blossom floral - some pattern progress

Hello everyone,
It's been awhile since my last post. Travelling to London, Paris, Venice, Amalfi and Rome will keep anyone busy. :) But I'm back and refreshed and happy.

I'm about to start Module 2 of the fabulous Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design course. I think it's going to be another terrific module.
I completed the first Module earlier this year and I really enjoyed the whole process. Being a Graphic Designer working full time in an Engineering company does not lend itself to many creative design requests normally and can be 'very dry' so to speak for a creative soul, so I'm finding my creative joy and inspiration my own way through the world of surface pattern design. I know i've found what I really need and want to be doing.

I feel like I'm on a roll now. I've been busy working and building up a folio of designs that i hope to launch to the world one day soon. But first a need to get organised and build a website. Watch this space... www.patternplaystudio.com

My design work is evolving and I'm thinking of coordinates now, not just the basic initial pattern. I'm taking my drawings and building on them to produce what are hopefully considered cohesive, well thought out, dynamic, contemporary beautiful designs and patterns. For now, here's a first look at my Blossom floral design. I hope you like it.
I'd welcome any licensing opportunities of course! :)

Flower meadows

Hi there! Here's a recent pattern I created during the first module of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design e-course. I've got co-ordinates to match this little design and one day soon I hope they find their way out in the world. Although Module 1 has finished, I'm still drawing and designing patterns everyday and loving the challenge and sense of achievement I am feeling. I'm really looking forward to the next module which starts in October. The community part of the course has been fantastic. Meeting people from all over the world and connecting through the class Facebook posts has definitely been a highlight. Hope you like this pattern. Feel free to drop me a line and say hi. I'd love to hear from you.

Learning about Pattern co-ordinates

This week on the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design - Module 1, we learnt about creating pattern co-ordinates. The complementary designs to sit alongside a main pattern design.  I'm having a lot of fun on this course and it has opened my eyes to the endless patterns we creative souls can make. I can't wait to do more of this. What do you think of this pattern and its co-ordinates? Would love to license them of course. One can dream ... :)

Having fun with The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design Course

Floral pattern 1

I've recently started the first module in the online course The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design. Week two and I'm loving it. The course has opened my eyes to the patterns you see everywhere in life. Turning my rough sketches into patterns is really satisfying. Bring on week three!

Pattern creation practice

Birds and twigs
Repeat pattern practice - birds theme again.....

Hello there. I did something really exciting this week. I enrolled in Module 1 and 2 of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design course. Really excited to be making a step towards my goal.
Designing patterns and illustrations, whilst combining these with my graphic design skills and knowledge would be a wish come true.
Ofcourse I just had to do a repeat bird pattern didn't I? Hmmm...a new subject is well and truly in order.
